On March 13, Val Huff from Kootenay Native Plant Society and Kinseed Ecologies spoke to the Castlegar Garden Club on the integration of native plants in landscapes.

The presentation offered many insights into current climactic conditions, food supply, habitats for biodiversity and recommendations for beneficial strategies, which we all can achieve by starting small and being progressive in rewilding nature.

New members are welcome to join the club for $20 per year. They can then enjoy special presentations, field trips, garden tours, plant sales and best of all, the interactions with others in horticulture, agriculture and growers.

The Garden Club will be hosting two special events in the coming months.

The Annual Plant Sale will take place on May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Castlegar Station Museum. From veggie starts, to garden memorabilia, you will find everything gardening in this sale. The plant sale has become known for its incredible selection of perennials and a variety of other plant offerings, all donated by club members.

This year a special Mother’s Day workshop will be offered at the sale to design your own hanging basket. Bring family members and friends and have a wonderful time creating a one-of-a-kind flower basket. The cost is $40 per basket, including all supplies. It is scheduled from 10-12 noon while supplies last.

The BC Yukon Peony Committee with volunteer support from the Castlegar Garden Club, will be hosting a Peoples’ Choice Peony show June 14 - 15 at the Castlegar Sandman Hotel. For information contact hplove8@telus.net.

Mark June 16 on your calendars for the 18th Annual Castlegar Garden Tour. It will be a partnership with local quilters showcasing their artistic talent at all garden locations. If you have interest in sharing your garden with others, please contact Darlene at darlene@kalawsky.com for information, or on details of any of garden club activities.
