The Castlegar News has been nominated for a provincial journalism Ma Murray award by the BC and Yukon Community NewsMedia Association.

Editor-reporter Betsy Kline’s story “‘I couldn’t get over it’: Castlegar mother heads to the front lines of Ukraine” has been nominated for the Feature Article award. The piece delves into the story of April Huggett as she leaves Castlegar to help those on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The awards recognize excellence in advertising, writing and photography as created by community news organizations around British Columbia and Yukon. Three finalists have been announced for all categories and the winners will be unveiled at a BCYCNA gala in North Vancouver on April 20.

Margaret “Ma” Murray was a Canadian newspaper editor, publisher and columnist, as well as an Order of Canada officer. She built a legendary reputation running newspapers in British Columbia’s northeast with a spicy wit, rural wisdom and strong opinions.
