As residents strive to clean up the winter debris out of their yards, the City of Castlegar will be offering two disposal options for things like grass and hedge clippings, flowers, weeds, leaves and branches.
Curbside pick-up will be available April 19 in north Castlegar and April 20 in south Castlegar and then again May 31 in north Castlegar and June 1 in south Castlegar.
Residents can also use the city’s yard waste composting facility at the north end of the Castlegar & District Community Complex at 2101 6th Avenue with the exception of April 19-25 when it will be closed for the West Kootenay Trade Show.
One change for this year is that the compostable bags previously available from the city will no longer be accepted due to changes at the local landfill.
Guidelines
If using bags, they must be paper compostable bags. There is no limit on the number of compostable bags.
Bins and other containers may be used as long as they are identified as containing yard waste. There is a limit of two containers per household.
Bags and bins will only be picked up if they weigh less than 20 kg each.
Tree prunings must be bundled with compostable twine. Individual bundles can be no longer than one metre in length and 0.5 metre in diameter. Maximum allowable branch diameter is 75 mm.
Accepted items include grass, hedge clippings, flowers and weeds, leaves, vegetable stalks, plants, and tree and shrub branches.
Examples of items that will not be accepted include rocks and construction demolition dirt, sod, stumps, flowerpots, painted or treated wood, food waste, household recyclables, animal waste, Styrofoam, and foam.
